I believe that it is impossible to escape from either reality – the physical, earthly reality and the eternal, heavenly reality. Both are of the utmost importance. We are eternally body and spirit in unity, and though we may not understand how they interact, what we experience in our bodies definitely affects our spirits, and vice versa. Every second we have sensations that are directly related to our thoughts. The physical sensations have an effect on rejoicing in Christ. For example, when we look at a beautiful scene, we rejoice in the eternal cause. So all of these sensations – from seeing, to thinking, to feeling – affect how we rejoice in Christ. As we age, we become increasingly aware of our own mortality and the ways in which sin and death have begun to take a toll on our bodies and minds. We may grow tired more easily, feel more pain, and find that we are no longer able to do the things we once could. Our once bright expectations for the future may start to fade. Even some of the things that we used to enjoy have become less enjoyable as we have gotten older. One of the discouraging realities we have to face is that even though we have had some amazing experiences with the Holy Spirit, where we felt really connected to divine power, we are not able to do the same physical work that we could when we were younger. This can be really upsetting to think about as we get older, especially since it can make us feel like we are losing our connection to the divine. And yet, we are still more profoundly affected by the work of the Holy Spirit in our bodies. We cannot understand how the Holy Spirit brings about life to our bodies, but He has directly caused us to live longer and fuller lives by the minute-by-minute experience in our lives. The longer we ponder on the Word, the more the Spirit sets in motion the function of the brain, and the greater freedom in the formation of brain cells. We can change the chemical balance of our brains by how we think. So when we begin taking captive every thought, we begin by the Word, the Spirit causes us to have greater physical sensations as we view the glory of Christ in the face of Jesus.Even though we will only be able to understand Christ to a limited extent while we are alive on Earth, we will still be able to see and interact with him in a real and eternal way once we die and go to heaven. This will allow us to finally gain a fuller understanding of who he is and what he means to us. The rewards we receive in the afterlife will be based on what the Holy Spirit has done in our lives while we are on Earth, through our prayers and our interactions with the word of God. Christ is the source of our salvation, and we can only see him clearly through the physical senses that we have.
