Tongue-speaking, or glossolalia, is a phenomenon that can occur in both public and private settings, not just in church. This profound experience needs to be addressed, not just the rules that govern it. I do not speak in tongues myself, but I have seen how the focus on tongues in some churches has become a way to judge people and make them feel like they are not good enough. This is not what the gifts of the Spirit are meant for. There is no longer a focus on tongues and the gifts of the Spirit in these churches, but rather on human faith as the means to obtain things. This evolution of the historical focus on tongues has led to a doctrine of man that is not in line with what the gifts of the Spirit are meant for. It is difficult for me to speak about personal experience, but unless we are having regular meetings where we share our experiences and talk about them in our faith, then we are not really understanding the Christian faith and how to apply it to our lives. Unless our doctrine leads us to experiences that we cannot explain, we are falling short of the supernatural. In my experience, if we do not have control over our thoughts, then we will be confused about the nature of the experience, the agency, and the effects. We are in a battle for the mind, and even though prayer and living our lives in this world involves an attitude of prayer, I think that this can be a cop out. Our experiences are always influenced by our thoughts and perceptions. This means that our experiences are always shaped by our mental state. And experience is always a process in which we become more aware of the eternal and spiritual aspects of it than we are of the passage of time. In eternity, we do not experience the effects of time; there is no schedule, and really that which we can not explain involves timeless experience. In eternity, we bring our minds with us, so the experience of seeing Christ face to face is the full revelation of joy and comfort in this encounter. We are currently experiencing a perseption of what it will be like when we are dead to sin and alive in Christ. Our experience is not focused on the sinfulness because we have the Spirit who gives life to our mortal bodies. In other words, we are sealed with the Spirit and we experience His life-giving effects, which makes us feel as we are in heaven, but only partially.
