Even when we are disobedient and not living up to our side of the bargain, God remains faithful to His promises, as the Psalmist teaches. This means that God is always consistent in upholding creation and forgiving His rebellious people. Even though God is always faithful in upholding His word and covenant, we cannot claim that we have fulfilled our vows without atonement, as the Psalmist also teaches. This is because all men live before this faithful God and are required to come to Him for atonement. Therefore, all men will come to Him in confession. it is essential that we maintain continual atonement in order to keep the nation together. God chose us before the foundation of the world so we would not become covenant breakers and bring destruction to the nation. First of all, God atones for our sins and He also sustains the creation. This is why He chose us in the first place- so that we would be faithful to Him and maintain the unity of the nation. If we were not faithful, the nation would cease to exist. He chose people who are weak and dependent, and who are overwhelmed by their rebellious hearts. He sustains us by His eternal covering of sin, just like He sustains the creation on a daily basis. We can recite this Psalm with confidence, knowing that God is sustaining us. We should know the God who is more ready to cover over our rebellion than to hold us to the perfect standard.
