Although someone may believe in certain religious tenets, this does not mean they are automatically a Christian. For example, James says that even devils believe in God but still tremble. This highlights that it is not simply a matter of believing certain facts, but also having an emotional response to them. If we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that he has been raised from the dead, then we will be saved. This type of believing is a change that takes place in our whole person, a change in our identity. Our individual identities are not just determined by our willpower, but by a combination of factors including our minds, desires, understanding, emotions, and physical makeup. In order to make any real change in our lives, we must first make a fundamental change in all aspects of ourselves – both our inner selves and our outward appearances. This starts with the way we view things – not just in a physical sense, but in a spiritual sense as well. When we view an object, we don't see it for what it is, but we also form an opinion of based on whether we like it or not. When we think about a chocolate cake, we remember the pleasure we got from our senses being involved and we understand the cake is good. In other words, we believe that the cake is good based on the pleasure we get in our minds when we think about the cake. If we liked the word "cake" on a page and believed the word cake was good, that wouldn't be much faith. There is no apprehension of that object (the cake) but just the apprehension of the word on the page. No, we must have a sense the cake is real by tasting, feeling, and smelling it.The mind is pleased with Christ because He is the only hope in this life. We see Christ with our spiritual eyes given to us at regeneration, and for the first time He becomes more valuable than any other object that we have sensed. We then know Him and desire and choose to obey Him. When we are presented with the option to eat cake, our desire for the cake becomes greater than our desire to not eat it, and so we make the choice to eat the cake. Our choice is determined by our mind being pleased with the cake and our desire to have the cake determines our choice. In the same way, when we are regenerated, we receive a divine knowledge that leads us to choose salvation.
