I am a Calvinist, and my views on the sovereignty of God are based on an interpretation of the historical context of God's dealings with Israel. I do not believe that Israel represents a theocracy, but instead I believe that they are a special people chosen by God to be a light to the nations. Instead of thinking of the Old Testament relationship between God and Israel as primarily political, I believe it is better to see it as redemptive. This means that I believe that God ordained all the events in history for the purpose of salvation, not only to show that He has power over all things. The spiritual dilemma we face as individuals is not one of possibility, but of impossibility. Sin is not only defined as rebellion against God, so that we focus on a God who dares us to go against His will, but sin is the destructive reason for all that happens between men. This means that we cannot hope to find a way to reconcile with God on our own – we must rely on His grace and mercy to save us from our own sinfulness. Calvinism is not intended to show us that no man can thwart God's will. In fact, it is intended to show us that there are reasons beyond our understanding why God might choose to do something even if we cannot understand it. This is not to say that we can never feel pain, but that we can understand why God might do something despite our pain. The belief that God is sovereign means that He is always trustworthy, loving, patient, and kind. God does not curse His own people; instead, He promises blessings to them, but these blessings are only possible if His people believe in His promises. Those who think that God deliberately makes His own children sad do not understand His relationship with Israel as that of a father. God is always faithful to His promises, and He wants His people to be blessed. However, those blessings are only possible if His people believe in His promises. Those who think that God causes sadness in His children do not understand the nature of His relationship with Israel as that of a loving father. This is why the relationship between God and a nation is often described as a father and children relationship, with God as the father. This is because God's grace is the foundation of His relationship with His people, and He is faithful to them even when disaster strikes. God responds to the curses of men because He is kind and wants to show His love for His children. Sin destroys people, and God must punish those who destroy others in order to demonstrate His love for His creation. All the bad things that happen in the world are ultimately aimed at showing God's mercy to His children.
