We find the two-line approach to teaching confusing. This approach suggests that God has one perspective and we have another, and that these two perspectives never intersect. However, we also know that the law of non-contradiction exists, which means that you can't say that a person is both evil and good at the same time in the same event. Therefore, the two-line approach appears to be contradictory. However, we are aware that we are saved by grace and lead our lives within that grace. This is precisely what Jesus taught. A rich man approached Him and asked if there was anything else he needed to do, since he had already fulfilled all the requirements of the law.Jesus was not pleased with the question this man asked. In response, Jesus cursed him by placing the whole weight of the law upon him. We see this same situation repeated throughout Jesus' ministry. It was forbidden in the old testament for Israel to go to war without first asking God if He would go with them. The reason is that even though the law, the decrees, and the statutes had been established in Israel, it did not give them the authority to pursue war through the establishment of their government. The question at hand was not how they were to fulfill their responsibility, but rather why they were given the oracles in the first place. They never reasoned that, because they were given the oracles, they could pursue the covenant that God had established, which included eliminating their enemies from the promise land. Instead, they were forbidden to act on their own. What was the response of the people when they were asked how they confessed their obedience to honor God? They said that it is not in their horses or swords, but in the Name or authority of the Lord alone. They did not say that God commanded this and they must do it, but instead confessed that God alone does it.
