One of the puzzling experiences I have had is, the more I describe the greatness of the gift of real grace, the more opposition I seem to face from some people. It is as though someone were offering you a million dollars for the taking, and you were upset because there is nothing you have to do to receive it.Why do people oppose the teaching of freedom? One reason may be that they are concerned about Christian liberty. Grace teaches us that no matter how big or bad our sin is, Christ has covered it. This message of grace may be seen as a threat to some people's way of life. How can we measure grace if we must show that we deserve it? This is like saying that God must punish us because if we show that we need grace, then the gift of salvation is not that big.The more we need grace, the greater the grace that is available to us. If there were no such thing as sin, there would be no need for grace. Sometimes we try to convince ourselves that we don't need to be saved, in order to show how much we need grace. But the whole point of being saved is that we need grace that we could not earn on our own. So I tell people that if they are going to weigh the importance of grace, they need to consider the whole law and how it applies to them. Because only then will they truly see how free and amazing grace is.I believe that we can only grow when we are most free because in salvation we receive the full gift. I describe it as everything we are told not to do being already programmed in us in a spiritual sense, and every good thing being already allowed to prosper. Let me address two lines: Freedom is real freedom. It is not the freedom that we are given at the outset and then taken away during sanctification. We become free by being reminded that we are sinners. We already intuitively know that we are sinners. We cannot atone for our ongoing sin. The atonement is really complete. I mean really. We are justified in justifying our actions even though we are sinners.Even though we fail, we are not reduced to our old relationship to the law.
