Ps 85 10 Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 The LORD will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.
13 Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps.
The Psalms teaches that just as Israel was saved by the actions of God who dwells in eternity but lowered Himself and was the cloud by day and the fire by night so also are we saved by imputed righteousness. What do the Psalms teach about imputed righteousness?
We find that the Psalmist used two terms as the explanation of Gods unfailing love.7 Show us your unfailing love, O LORD ,
and grant us your salvation. He used love and faithfulness, righteousness and peace, The love in this context was Gods acts toward Israel that were called wonders being seen in totally delivering Israel from all her enemies. The result was Gods faithfulness. But in order for God to deliver Israel He must respond to His elect when they cry out to God for restoration. When God acts as the Savior He is uniting the whole nation. He is forgiving His covenant people who are identified with the all the inhabitants of the nation acting to reunite the nation on behalf of His covenant people.
But God does not restore the nation because of any satisfaction from their suffering or their wanting to reunite as a nation. Rather these terms are used as God acting on behalf of the nation because He is pleased with His own work of righteousness on the earth. This is why when Israel is restored as a nation God acts to defend His own righteousness that He establishes on behalf of Israel. 13 Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps " In other words as God led Israel as a cloud , He was establishing His own kingdom on behalf of the nation. He overcame their enemies as His presence was seen going before them. And He established the nation by His law as they proceeded to the promise land. God was only pleased with His work. Every thing that God does in salvation is done in God and not in any other object.
This is why Gods unfailing love was the cause of Him being glorified by His work of salvation. The work within the Godhead was united with the success of saving Israel by Gods love meeting His faithfulness, and Gods righteousness meeting His peace. You could say that heaven and earth are united in God being pleased with Himself. 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,and righteousness looks down from heaven.This expression of Gods covenant is set down in legal arguments as the only orthodox way to establish Gods recreation of the nation and blessing the land. It is the confession of the prophets that provided the success of all Israels military endeavors.
The whole argument for God to turn His wrath away from Israel was pronounced in Gods being pleased with Himself in uniting His righteousness with His peace. You find this legal petition spread throughout the Psalms as the only basis for the Psalmist petitions. Its like he looks away from himself as he sets his argument before God as if he would be labelled a traitor if he was tempted to argue on the righteousness or repentance of the people.The curse was enforced in the Psalmist hate for infused righteousness. It was like saying that if you come to God with your own righteousness ...let God curse you.
