Ps 33 22May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you."
Gods unfailing love is the foundation of our faith. The Psalmist teaches that our trust in God is resting in His unfailing love. The opposition to our faith is a continuous state of restlessness. We are taught that achieving a state of rest is to be settle down in our spirit so that there is nothing that is weighing us down. In other words in our fallen state we are motivated to respond to guilt, fear, worry and sorrow. But the Psalmist says that spiritual rest is to kill the power of the weight of these cursed dispositions.
So we must speak the Psalms in order to identify the weight and roll it over to God. This ability to achieve spiritual rest by rolling the cursed temptations is learned through speaking according to our image in Christ. In renewal God describes and reveals who we are by the law, covenants, etc....the gifts...and we confess these on our lips in pronouncements. In other words if we want to understand real rest then we must know the kings language. Because a disposition is learned by self talk. This is why a baby christian does not understand what to roll over to God because He does not know who he is.
This is why rolling the worry , fear etc over to God is not done through steps but by learning to appeal to God on the basis of His covenant and expressing the trouble in the pronouncements and questions in the Psalms to Him according to our human passions and desires. We must understand that the way to control our emotional reactions is to unite our human reactions with Gods pronouncements. We must achieve rest through aligning our soul. When we are controlled by emotion our souls are disjointed. When we rest we have gained control over our reactions. The Psalms teach us self control through uniting our souls with Gods description of the way to control ourselves by becoming comfortable with Christ image. All change comes through word and Spirit. The words of the Psalms are the christian diary of self talk that changes who we think we are.
We are most at ease when we have found God. God is the only totally free Being in the universe. Gods will cannot be thwarted. God does exactly what He pleases. God does not need anything outside of Himself to be fulfilled. God is complete within Himself. So the Psalmist has learned the art of knowing himself by knowing God. So when the Psalmist appeals to God for whatever the Psalmist needs according to Gods unfailing love , the Psalmist is saying that his needs can only be met when God is most free to do as He pleases. The Psalmist is not saying that in order to be satisfied the Psalmist must appeal to Gods unfailing love as representing crossing the Psalmist will, but whatever the Psalmist needs when the Psalmist appeals to God according to Gods unfailing love could be revealed to Psalmist in the future. So our rest in Gods free choice is always growing to closer unity as God meets our present needs ,changes needs by our desires or reveals to us our needs. Gods unfailing love will teach us who we are...it cannot fail.
