In Psalm 91, we are powerfully reminded that by making the Most High our sanctuary—our refuge—we invoke His divine protection. The Lord promises to command His angels to guard us in all our endeavors, offering us safety and comfort amid life’s storms. Many have interpreted the rejection of Cain's sacrifice as a condemnation of his offering because it lacked the blood of an animal. However, such an interpretation is flawed and simplistic, particularly because the Lord accepted grain offerings on numerous occasions (as seen in Leviticus 2), and these offerings provided a means for the poorest in Israel to atone for their sins (Leviticus 5:11-13). Cain's true failing lies not in the nature of his offering but in the evil that resided in his heart, a malevolence that culminated in the tragic murder of his brother Abel. The apostle John makes it clear in 1 John 3:11-15 that Cain’s formal but faithless worship was a reflection of his inner corruption. Psalm 5:7 reminds us of the Lord's stance against deceit and bloodshed, stating, “You annihilate those who engage in falsehood; the LORD detests bloodthirsty and deceitful individuals.” This powerful declaration emphasizes that the Lord stands firmly against those who perpetrate injustice and wickedness. The lordship of Christ is beautifully affirmed through His merciful advocacy for us, His creation, as He intercedes on our behalf. In Psalm 5:12, we find comfort in the words, “Indeed, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you encircle them with your favor as a protective shield.” Here, we are reassured that those who strive for righteousness are enveloped in the Lord’s favor, acting as a divine barrier against the trials that seek to overwhelm us. In this light, we are reminded of the importance of integrity and sincerity in our worship and the necessity of aligning our hearts with the divine truths of the Lord. Our prayers for justice and divine intervention are not merely cries for help; they are also calls for a deeper understanding of our relationship with God, who is ever faithful and just, ready to defend and uphold the righteous while standing in opposition to all that is false and wicked in the world. As we reflect on our limitations and vulnerabilities, we humbly call upon the Lord to act on our behalf; in doing so, we acknowledge that He alone deserves all the glory. The Lord serves as our refuge, shield, rock, stronghold, and the Creator of all things visible and invisible. He operates according to His divine principles and has bestowed upon us the authority to invoke His intervention in our lives. John Calvin provides insight into this matter, noting that when God encounters false worship, especially when it is intertwined with blatant mockery of His holiness, it is entirely understandable that He would detest it and refuse to tolerate it. As RC Sproul warns, “Woe to them! They have followed the way of Cain; they have fallen into Balaam’s error for the sake of profit; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.” These individuals become a stain on the community of believers, participating in love feasts without the slightest scruples—self-serving shepherds who feed only themselves, neglecting the true and sacred responsibilities entrusted to them.
