Religious expression in the United States tends to be characterized by a degree of restraint. This phenomenon may be attributed to the inherent contradictions that individuals are often taught to navigate. The Bible is not merely a text to be approached with the same rigor as a conventional academic textbook; rather, it embodies complex dichotomies such as love and hate, judgment and blessing, among others. It serves as a medium through which individuals engage in a profound struggle for understanding and interpretation.

I recall a pastor who facilitated bi-weekly one-on-one discussions with me regarding various aspects of life. My method of engaging in these dialogues resembled a form of wrestling, characterized by a vigorous exchange of ideas. Through these conversations, I acquired substantial insights, and I believe my personal growth during those hour-long sessions exceeded that which I gained from any sermons I attended. I had the impression that he tolerated my approach; however, in private interactions, I typically exhibit serious expressions and exhibit a passionate commitment to my faith. I am accustomed to a direct and forceful manner of communication.
