It is rather hypocritical for us to derive a sense of acceptance from our engagement with contemporary culture—manifested in our manner of dress, the topics we discuss, and our prevailing worldview—while simultaneously judging the behaviors of individuals in ancient cultures, such as those depicted in the Old Testament. Many individuals draw comparisons that suggest that those in the Old Testament were more extreme in their practices than we are today. However, based on our own experiences, we navigate our daily lives without much reflection on the cultural norms we ostensibly adhere to. It is worth considering that, despite the numerous regulations attributed to the Old Testament, the individuals of that time may not have had the capacity to be as fervently devoted to their traditions as we often presume.

Consequently, the typical citizen found comfort in the simplicity of existing within these social class demarcations, embodying a humanity that parallels our own. An integral aspect of living in grace involved the ability to concentrate on the anticipated Redeemer. Just as grace alleviates the burdens imposed by excessive regulations, these individuals experienced a similar form of saving grace. It is crucial not to exaggerate the cultural disparities to such an extent that they distort our understanding of the past. While it may be tempting to construct imaginative narratives, it is important to remember that these individuals were not superhuman. Throughout history, there has consistently existed a covenant community that functioned within the parameters of their human experience. It is evident that the average individual tends to adopt a simplistic mode of thinking and frequently lacks the time or inclination to critically examine the significance of cultural norms. Such individuals often adhere to behaviors instilled in them from childhood without question. In this context, the stringent emphasis on legalistic observance is predominantly manifested among religious and political leaders, reminiscent of the hierarchical structures present in contemporary society, which also encompasses a professional class. While one might navigate this tendency to distort truths in an academic environment, such practices are less acceptable within everyday vernacular.
