There exists a certain spirit of pride that infiltrates one's thoughts and firmly establishes itself at the core of their character. This spirit carries a heavy burden, causing anxiety to flourish and worldly worries to multiply. It is a natural resistance to being "in Christ." It yearns to exert more control and create patterns of behavior centered around new idols, which are mere fleeting moments of emotional gratification. However, these idols ultimately prove to be unsatisfying and self-reliant. Being "in Christ" means constantly boasting about and for Christ. It requires a continuous desire to be lived out, sought after, and nurtured in order to overcome this ugly resistance. In Christ, desire never loses its power to boast; it always sustains the soul, causing the idols to fade away in comparison to the greater pleasure found in Christ. Rejoicing in Christ is an integral part of the spiritual unity enjoyed by the body of Christ worldwide. To boast in Christ is to align oneself with the beggars and the afflicted, not only experiencing the pleasure and resistance of great power but also acquiring the power to eliminate self-will. Truly identifying with those in need is synonymous with boasting in Christ because boasting in Christ is boasting in community. Now, we no longer boast as individuals but rather boast together, forsaking not only self-centered boasting but also forgetting ourselves for the sake of our brothers.
