Merely ceasing to engage in sinful behavior does not necessitate a thorough examination and resolution of one's underlying sinful tendencies. Our society often fails to acknowledge the numerous forms of addiction beyond the commonly recognized ones. Therefore, when comparing our obedience to Christ's commands, we must delve beyond a mere checklist. Interestingly, this mirrors the approach taken by the rich man when encountering Christ. It is intriguing to envision the juxtaposition of the rich man on one side of the argument and Christ presenting the adulterous individual in this particular context. This intriguing contrast emerges when the wealthy individual approaches Christ with a meticulously constructed framework for achieving success, which he uses to argue for his notion of righteousness. His confidence does not stem from expecting that Christ's response would enhance his appearance of righteousness, but rather from his audacious claim that he has fulfilled all necessary requirements. Consequently, he seems to disregard the teachings of the Old Testament regarding God's covenant of grace. If he genuinely desired to establish a positive relationship with Christ, he would have approached with an attitude of gratitude for all that God had bestowed upon him, acknowledging his undeserving nature. It is crucial to differentiate between the personality of evil as an addiction and adherence to the law as the benchmark for addiction. In this case, the man, who seemed righteous by having eliminated all his addictions, was unable to eradicate his addiction to self.The individual engaging in marital infidelity harbored the belief that she was incapable of overcoming her addiction. So why did Christ treat her with acceptance? Simply put, He chose to bestow His grace upon her. This highlights the fact that there was no logical justification for accepting her, except for His merciful nature. It is perplexing to comprehend how someone so morally reprehensible and tarnished could experience such a remarkable transformation. However, this is because she comprehended that she did not merit acceptance from Christ based on her own righteousness. This is the essence of the gospel of grace.
