It is perplexing to fathom why Jesus would condemn the Pharisees by likening them to canines, and subsequently censure his own adherents. The intention of the gospel is not to inculcate dread, but instead to communicate encouraging tidings.As I have pursued a greater understanding of the doctrinal tenets of American Christianity, I have experienced a growing sense of disconnection from the dominant beliefs and practices of this religious tradition.Self-denial is commonly associated with religious individuals, suggesting that they are inclined to adopt this attribute as part of their lifestyle. In contrast, individuals who do not follow Christian principles may view self-denial as unusual and less likely to engage in such behavior. Self-denial is considered an essential characteristic among believers, as it allows them to overcome self-centeredness and gain control over their desires. This quality is highly regarded because it enables saints to free themselves from their ego and relinquish their self-possession.The obligation to make amends for one's transgressions through adherence to the law is no longer applicable to us. Our release from the law is a result of our surrendering of personal agency. Rather than instilling apprehension, abstinence from self-gratification should cultivate a feeling of membership and participation in the benefits of Christ.If one asserts his ownership of himself, he assumes full responsibility for attaining salvation. However, the attainment of salvation is entirely contingent on grace. Additionally, ones practice of self-renunciation leads him to conclude that he is unable to save himself. As such, we can place all of our difficulties, including our wrongdoings, in the hands of Christ, since we identify as belonging to Him.
