When we think of self-control, we often think of it in terms of restraining ourselves from doing something. However, self-control can also be a positive force. If we only tried to keep ourselves from doing something, we would always end up in total misery. But self-control is a balance of enjoying all the things that God has sanctified. It's not solely about prohibiting ourselves from doing something. In fact, it is about enjoying these things with the purpose of glorifying God through them.It is evident that each individual has their own unique way of glorifying God. We are all different, we are called to different task, and we are all to be using these things to minister to others. However, if we are miserable in relation to enjoying the company of others, then there is no amount of self control that is going to balance us out. If we think that we can choose between two objects, and not have a necessity toward one or the other prior to our choice, then that is no choice at all.The only way we will be able to control others is if we are driven by self-interest. This is because we will be motivated by the need to get what we want, rather than by any sense of morality. However, if we can see that our ability to control ourselves is linked to what we enjoy the most, then we will realize that self-control is something we desire, and is necessary before we can make any choices. Self-control is choosing the good that is most pleasing to us, and enjoying the freedom from choosing the bad by the grace we receive.
