When man fell from God's grace, he lost his ability to make moral choices. Prior to the fall, man had the free will to choose between good and evil. But after the fall, man's understanding of what is good and evil was clouded and he was alienated from God. As a result, man is unable to do good because he is dead in sins and trespasses. His will is in bondage to sin, so all of his choices are evil and not done to glorify God.Even the free choices that people make on a daily basis, whether they are moral or practical choices, are motivated by self-love rather than love of God. People choose what they desire the most. Since people are dead in their sin, they cannot choose to love God unless they are made alive by the Holy Spirit. regeneration comes when the Spirit applies the word of God to a person's heart and the person is made alive. He or she is given a new knowledge, the light of the glorious gospel, the light of Jesus Christ.Men often desire to do what is good because it pleases their minds. However, sometimes a man is exposed to the word of God and appears to be regenerated, but this is only due to his having undergone a legal conviction. As time goes on, it will become clear that the man is not actually choosing out of a love for Christ, but out of a love for himself and his sin. The Spirit alone moves to regenerate a man. This is because the Spirit brings about a change in the man's heart, making him want to follow God and be obedient to His Word.
