The law is a curse for those who violate it, pronouncing death as the just recompense. Anyone who violates even the least of the commands will receive this punishment. Anything less than this standard is making an idol of oneself. Since the wicked resolutely opposes God's law, they lower God's standards. The wicked hate God's Law because it thwarts their evil schemes. These complex schemes are their way of explaining a world without God. Since they order their lives without any thoughts of God, they conveniently express their passionate anger by cursing God.The truth is that people who worship idols are actually seeking death. According to God, those who make idols will be like those idols. Idols are just pieces of wood that have been engineered by man; they are lacking in the senses of taste, touch, hearing, and speech. An idol is a lifeless thing. When people worship idols, they are actually cursing themselves. When people are ambitious and in pursuit of death, they spread that to the people around them. All ambitious people, if not constrained by God's law, would be murderers. Although humans may attempt to exert control over nature, they will ultimately be subject to the judgement of God. Those who misuse their authority will be punished in order to prevent them from oppressing others. The law is written with curses because it is necessary to do so in order to achieve these goals. The king's cup is filled with the finest quality wines, which appropriately represents his authority to pronounce official death sentences. Although God has gifted leaders with the appropriate authority over people, when they misuse this authority, He fills their cup up with judgement. God is firmly opposed to wicked kings through the curse of the law. Rather than bringing the quick judgment of death, God orders all things according to His justice. God thwarts the evil intentions of the wicked by working together with natural causes. In this way, the king drinks down the evil results of his clever schemes, which only serve to increase his judgment. The king is consuming the curses that are written in the law, and Christ will ultimately judge him for his actions. In consuming the pleasurable contents in the cup, the king drinks down the curses. How does the eternal Ruler over oppressive governments justify Himself? Through the eternal curses written in the law. Christ will inflict retribution in the ultimate judgment.
