The covenant God made with David was a long-term commitment that would see Him rule over David's house and subdue all of His enemies. David was a faithful servant of God, and his actions demonstrated that he was deserving of this covenant. This covenant is an extension of the covenant God made with Abraham, and it shows that He is faithful to His promises. David was a powerful King and he was able to accomplish a lot during his time as King, but he was just a servant of God. He was able to lead his people in righteousness and protect them from their enemies. God is faithful and will always keep His promises, even to those who are faithful servants.God had foreseen that the Kingdom of God would come to earth through the line of David, and so He took action to ensure that this would happen. This extended beyond the time of David, so that the kingdom would come upon the earth through the descendants of David.Christ came as the promised ruler of the house of Israel, fulfilling all of David's prophecies about his reign. This fulfilled David's desires and fulfilled the terms of the covenant made between David and God. In this way, Christ could pronounce blessings and curses on this earth. The language of the covenant in the Old Testament was not fully understood at its full glory. This was due to the fact that it was given within the context of a focus on God, so that all of the expression of David's conflict was funneled into redemption. However, there were glimpses of that glory in the covenant language that the people of Israel were allowed to worship beyond the walls of the temple. This means that the language of the covenant would be seen throughout the earth. When Christ came into time, he arrived as the radiant presence of God. This glory was concealed, but through his obedience Christ had the authority to pronounce blessings and curses on the house of Israel. This authority comes from God, who sits high above all things, and does not rule with a pragmatic justice. But he communicates through his covenant condescension. His language is Fatherly. Christ, who is the radiance of God, established his oneness in the Trinity by fulfilling his role as the eternal Son.In a real sense, our reality in this world is our oneness with the Father through Christ. Christ says that if you've seen Him, you've seen the Father. In other words, as Christ was involved in this world as a man, our Father is present with us in the smallest things. Christ came as the second David, the perfect embodiment of God's glory, who had all things placed under His feet. But from all eternity, as the eternal Son, all of time was working through and for Him, proceeding from Him and for His purposes. Christ is the source of all that exists and moves, and He has always been working towards our good. Through Him, we can have eternal life.
