I do not believe that pride is something that only occurred once, with our first parents. I think that it is something that happens all the time, with every generation. Those born after Adam were born in sin, so they are enemies of God instead of enjoying being created in fellowship with Him. So pride is not just a mistake in how we see our own worth, but it is also rebellion against God. Pride is something that is perpetuated by the Devil himself – in other words, the Devil has a family of arrogant people. This is a family of people who have been given delegated authority by their father, the king, in order to overthrow God. They do this by covering over or denying the power of his word. In the Old Testament, this was a people who were outside of the covenant relationship with God. When we see Christ distinguishing between pride and blessing, we see that the representatives of pride are the religious leaders of His day. In fact, the word study of pride shows that it is any kind of denial that God's word is as He says it is (outside of the covenant relationship). When people are proud, they are more likely to avoid God's word and deny that it has absolute authority, as Jesus did with the Pharisees. He called them snakes, blind guides, hypocrites, white washed tombs, brood of vipers, full of greed and self indulgence, etc. What Jesus is saying is that when men ascend to positions of authority in this world, the way they use their authority often reflects their inner motive of pride rather than humility. these Pharisees were using their authority to make other people's lives more difficult by burdening them with rules, instead of helping to take the load off their backs. This is how men get swollen with pride. What we have here is a clear separation between God's authority and man's authority. Because any other comparison would be to use pragmatism to define authority, which is acceptable without a clear definition of what is biblical authority. This is why God says that the humble are those who suffer at the hands of evil authority. According to the Bible, Jesus not only cursed the Pharisees, He also undermined their system of authority. Jesus not only came to define the terms, but He also separated the sheep from the goats in defense of those who were abused. In doing so, He showed that He is on the side of the poor and helpless, and that He will not allow them to be mistreated. He came to show that He is a just God who stands up for the oppressed, and that anyone who mistreats them will be held accountable.
