The author's argument relies on an erroneous assumption. He claims some people can be reconciled while they are still enemies, but this cannot be substantiated from the text. Next, he argues the text is referring to these people. However, this interpretation does not hold up because the author states these similar people were never part of the enemies group to begin with. Our desire to seek God is something that we cannot determine. I know from my own experience that the motive to worship God comes not from our intellectual understanding of God, but from a desire that grows within us. However, some people believe it is our choice that determines our desire. They suffer it backwards. Hence, there is a sense in which our desire is never completely understandable. How do we experience that desire? We acquire it from the Spirit employing the word to us. The Psalmist says the heart of man is a deep well and who can grasp it? He knows moreover about us than we effect and can assist us in coming to a more reasonable understanding of ourselves. As God produced the universe out of nothing, our desires and thoughts are recreations from a predominately mysterious beyond what we thoroughly grasp. Why does one person believe and another person reject? Because God did not produce the genuine life in that person. If we say our conscious will determines our desire, there is nothing we can accept unless we follow it. This is because for us to maintain a desire, we must will, and to select it, we must follow it with our minds. This is why inability is the vacuum that bears us back to the grace of recreation. Our desires do more than support choice; they create our health and future. The Psalmist says the heart of man is a deep well and who can follow it? The desire of man is mysterious because it acts beyond our understanding of important recreation. How does God act in response to our prayers? He gathers us and then the Spirit follows our prayers and establishes them. Hence, the Spirit follows orthodox prayers and purifies the motives behind them, effecting them into our lives. We pray the accurate words but we may not quite consistently follow the complete alignment of our motives with those words. God's word is voiced to be health to our bones. How does the word function if it is merely a means that we understand and determine? At that point our choice would comprise the determinate factor of working. The importance of engaging in activities that promote faith (such as prayer and reading scripture) is greater than the importance of engaging in activities that exercise our faculties (such as thinking and reasoning). We would never seek out God if the word (scripture) accused us of not wanting to do the right thing. But we go to God because He produces a desire in us by the Spirit that allows and constrains us. Our war is in dividing the spirit and the flesh.
