Punishment is not a happy experience for those who break the law. It's designed as a punishment for lawbreakers, and it's supposed to help them learn their lesson and repent. However, since we're saved by grace, God also desires to comfort and protect us. This is why He allows us to experience grief and pain in this life. As we come closer to God, these experiences will eventually lead us to salvation.During our spiritual rebirth, we go through a period of growth in which we experience an increase in our spiritual abilities. At times it feels like we're going up, and at other times it feels like we're going down. But, through the help of our Shepherd, we eventually reach a source of fresh, life-giving water. We've changed our relationship with God because of our sin. Now, because we've been justified by faith, we can enjoy His peace and protection. We need to start hearing the gospel's saving message and accepting its deliverance, for this is another way of being delivered from our problems. The description of this new relationship with God is found in God's body parts. Rather than Christ withholding His work for us, He is actually present before us, participating in our redemption. He is preventing us from reverting back to our old relationship with the law - which would have been a pretty slave-like situation. How does He do this? He speaks to us as the eternal Christ, representing the ultimate source of righteousness. So when we go through the valleys, He is there with His hand underneath us, preventing us from falling. We stumble and Christ forgives our sins, without demanding repayment according to our sins. He knows we are just dust and deals with us like a family member. When we put our trust in God's faithful nature as a covenant-keeping God, we know what to ask for and how He will work on our behalf. Because of this, we can trust Him to turn all of our sorrow and negative experiences into good. However, we must apprehend and truly understand God's eternal goodness in order to receive this new deliverance. Rather than punishing us, He treats us as His children and brings us into a new relationship with Him.
