In the wisdom books, pride is characterized as being self-reliant and not depending on God, while humility is characterized as depending on God and being willing to submit to His will. The deciding factor that distinguishes between the two is the relationship to God's covenant. Because God's is a covenant of grace, and grace is God gifting sinners with all that they need to live a life of godliness, humility is the correct posture to take because it recognizes our dependence on God. The way that God establishes our identity is through His word or promise. So the basis of our identity is founded on God's unfailing love or sovereign grace. The covenant of grace is one-sided, which means that if God makes a covenant with us, then He can be said to be pledging Himself to us. So who we are as His covenant people directly affects who He is. Through His covenant, we are so closely related to God that He promises to uphold His name in us so that He can be seen as a faithful God. In the New Testament, this concept appears in the word "saint".How can God show Himself faithful through a covenant breaker? Because any time we sin we actually act as our own god. Well God does this through His word. He implants His word in us the word of grace so when we fail we cannot change the fundamental relationship to God as His name is glorified in us. I mean how can you offend God if all He has given to you is through grace? You simply acknowledge that if not for the grace of God there go I. This relationship that we have with God is guaranteed to be successful. This is because the word of God, which we have been implanted with, cannot return void. It will accomplish His will in us. And this word, in its definition, is His desires implanted in us. Now this is interesting. Because God says that He will implant new desires in us that recreate us into His image. What is interesting is that He does not destroy our facilities but He actually renews them. He renews our desires by His word and Spirit. So that what we desire is what He desires. Now let me explain this in more detail. God is not just separate from us as holy. To image God as just other is mysticism. Its kind of like saying that God is separate in how He indwells us. And its also saying that God can only communicate through completely holy people. But God condescends to us and communicates His properties in us. In other words God does not use us as automatons but He actually interacts with our humanity. Our desires are not just from the spiritual perspective but they are interrelated with our flesh or physical wants. Now, this is what is interesting: God can recreate us in His image, as He has made us different from every other person. He doesn't change our personality or our physical giftedness, but He recreates us by bringing us to be whole again. And so, when we are talking about this covenant relationship, a total renovation of the whole man. a direction that cannot be altered. So, this is why a righteous man is said to be humble and a wicked man is said to be proud, because there is a total salvation and a total depravity of nature.
