In order to establish His relationship with us, God makes it clear that no one else can compare to His love for us. By distinguishing between human love and divine love, we see that God's love for us is personal and unique. This is why we are given a gift of faith, so that we can believe in God's standard of care and His absolute control over all things. If God was somehow limited in His ability to act according to His word, then He would be subject to our definition of love, which we learn from other people. We know that God's sovereign actions in our lives are based on our understanding of His love for us, and our trust that His grace is defined by the goodness of His gifts to us. So, by faith, we apprehend this direct communication of His love, understanding that it is based on His goodness. We not only understand our value through the gifts God has given us, but we also learn what true freedom is. If we have nothing that has not been given to us by God, then we must acknowledge that the smallest evidences of our value is acknowledging that God is thinking of us in every detail of our lives. There is nothing in our lives that we can list of what we have done or need to do can be accomplished if God does not first give it to us. In other words, God is necessary for us to accomplish anything. There is nothing that we have—no power, no love, no joy, no peace, no kindness, no faithfulness—that has not been given to us by God. Consequently, if it is given to us by God, then it is free. If it is free, then we are most free to receive it and find nothing lacking, even though we may feel helpless and dependent upon God. In this freedom, we are most happy in God.
