Ps 29 1 Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness." Gods throne has dazzling flashes of frequent lightning and thunder. Gods voice is like the thunder of the storm. You sit while in a fierce thunderstorm and listen to terrific thunder feel the earth shake. It is God drawing near. You realize creation is mysterious. The thunder and lightning are awesome and powerful. That voice is speaking natural law, covenant success, the fierce reordering in the curses, profound power in the decrees and the close overpowering voice in the promises. God made us to invariably respond to the divine creation by His authoritative voice in the continuous thunder. Oh God you are irresistible! We call our angels to watch the great event.
29 3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.4 The voice of the Lord is authoritative;the musical voice of the Lord is majestic." The voice of God is absolutely distinct. It is listening to the pronouncements we speak. It is pronouncing the profound majestic voice of God. We pronounce the musical voice until we vicariously experience the mystery of no acute tension. God shows a visible display of that distinct voice in the unusual storm. We are familiar with this mysterious presence of the majestic creator. If the voice was physically undisplayed in the uncontrollable noises of the storm, we would not enjoy the profound mystery of God. We reasonably demand that authentic voice of the axioms.
We are pronouncing the Psalms and then we vicariously experience a profound presence. It naturally follows the authoritative pronouncements. We have subdued the necessary tension of moral corruption. The divine mystery of God has descended. But what is that supernatural communication look like? It is the same mysterious voice when the fierce storm comes and the majestic sounds of the continuous thunder and fierce wind. It is the same peace after the fierce storm. It is a distinct silence beyond the normal silence.
29 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox." The majestic voice is the pronounced curses. The curses break up the organized opposition. They go out and genuinely shock the world. The eternal curses overwhelmingly dominate the heathen nations. We speak supernatural unity and divine power into the social order. When we speak the law and curses we instantly feel like we are bending hardened steel.
29 7 The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare." What does pronouncing the curses feel like? What happens in the transaction? You were in a fierce hurricane and eagerly watched the winds break up everything in their direct path? You vicariously experience the awesome power of God. Consequently, that storm approaches and you get animated. It is that familiar experience.
29
And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"10 The Lord sits enthroned over the
flood;the Lord is enthroned as King forever.11 The LORD gives strength
to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace."Gods voice causes
us to glorify Him. When God descends on us, we cannot stop crying
glory! We do not need countless songs or direct encouragement. We are
abundantly satisfied with divine mystery. We are totally acted upon.
This is why he compares the mighty voice to an out of control storm. It
comes upon us, and we vicariously experience extraordinary power that
cannot be properly contained or carefully controlled. This is why God
caused us to experience peace when we are undone by divine mystery.
