Ps 77 6 I remembered my songs in the night.
My heart mused and my spirit inquired:
7 "Will the Lord reject forever?
Will he never show his favor again?
8 Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?
In all of the Psalms we find different forms of speech to express trust, vision, anger, joy, satisfaction, frustration, separation, loneliness, and repetitive conviction. Mediation is an art form of understanding the meta physical world. They say in acting that we cannot tell you how to create the right image of the character that you are playing. You must study how they reacted to all life situations and use you artistic talent to bring that character to life.
This is the same thing that we do in trying to grown into the image of Christ. We are creatures who have knowledge of an image that we envision as the thing that we idolize. The most happy a person can be is what we say that they must be comfortable in their own skin. So the Psalms are written to expose the inward reality of the perfect man. That being viewed in a saint who is declared righteous. It is sin that has been atoned like the apostle concludes when he says "it was not I but sin that dwells in me." The redeemed self.
We must understand that mediation in the Psalms is study about spiritual effects and the personality of man. We are drawn into an environment where thinking is pleasurable. In others one of the art forms of self knowledge is the thinking process that controls our physical rest. When you spend years meditating on the Psalms and you bow your head and begin to meditate then you are not only thinking about the words but you are drawn into a world of pleasure because all connection between persons is the knowledge of self understand that is part of the experience in understanding other people. In this art form the Psalms have been a muse that creates the fullest self in experiencing the past events.
The way that we are drawn to the Psalms is that they create a world without tension. The most free thinking is accomplished in the environment where we use our imaginations. So when we develop images through our imaginations. The problem with the imagination is that we can confuse reality with fantasy. But all sin is done by fantasizing our power and the consequences. And really any time we have a false image of who we are the bible calls this being self righteous. So we can even use scripture to create a false image. This is why the safest study of scripture is to ask questions. Its a study of obsessing over words and how they fit together in the context near and far context. All of this must be accomplished by examination and questioning. But we must understand that the Psalms are expressions of human reactions that are challenged by solid and unchanging presuppositions.
Human beings are made to learn truth by repetition and and solid truth. God speaks the truth consistently. His words are authoritative. They judge all other words. In this way every Psalm where man expresses the troubles and God speaks the laws etc are both self revealing. So this is why the Psalmist as questions. Its because the pleasure of learning knowledge comes from questions. The bible does not really teach that questions show a lack of faith. The learning in classical education was from asking the question and getting the correct answer. One person would ask questions and the other person would answer so that this went on for hours. So the questions of the Psalmist show that he has thought about all the revealed answers to get to the questions about the mysteries.
You see self knowledge is learning that the answers are not easy because you come to the point where you find mystery. Your learning to distinguish between reality and fantasy
