Ps 119 119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;
therefore I love your statutes.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you;
I stand in awe of your laws."
Everything that exist was decreed in Gods eternal counsel. God spoke
all things into existence according to His law, decrees, statutes,
curses, decrees and promises. These axioms are not just standards of
conduct. The characteristics are
interwoven into the fabric of creation. This means that God views all
events according to His sovereign will. He planned and determined the
outcome of all things in His eternal counsel. The Psalmist teaches that
God writes the history of all the creation describing the past according
to the axioms as the reasonable argument for His decrees. The events of
time are proof that God acts according to His law in order to provide
the firm foundation so that He can prove that His purposes are always
successful. The Psalmist is saying that Gods works are proof that His
testimonies are true. He is teaching that the statutes are upheld by God
according to His testimonies or judgements.
The axioms are
also interwoven into the desires of man. God had to contain sin and
destruction by recreating all things according to the axioms. The
question is , Do we have a full revelation of salvation or are we left
in mystery until the final judgement? How can we trust that God works
sovereignly in containing the unity of salvation unless the axioms are
creative laws that allow and prevent the events of time? And if God has
not communicated to us a full salvation then we cannot be responsible
for our frustrations. If we are not responsible for our frustrations
then Christ cannot be a complete substitute. So the Psalmist is teaching
that we are restored to the creation covenant in which we fully
exercise our free will according to the axioms. If Christ is a complete
substitute then we must have free will to rule over the creation. Gods
government is revealed in Christ statutory work in looking backward from
the incarnation and going forward unto the final judgement.
The exercise of free will is the revelation of Gods sovereign
salvation. This free will has been revealed through the pronouncements
of the King. If the implantation of Gods law was not fully revealed then
man cannot be fully responsible for violating that law. If we are not
fully responsible then we are left to the judgements of man. If the
adjudication of salvation is not according to the law then salvation is
mystical. If salvation is mystical then there is no standard of free
will. God would not be successful if man was not free to fulfill his
purposes.
If God were not fully sovereign then He would not
have the power to overcome the consequences of sin and destruction. And
if man were not fully responsible he would have no hope of overcoming
this destruction. If man was not responsible according to Gods standard
of the law then he would destroy the world. So God had to decree
blessing and cursing in eternity past in order to eliminate the
opposition to the free exercise of His justice. Without justice there
would be no free will. So God established His justice and freedom in the
pronouncements. Gods justice is pronounced in order to establish the
line of blessing and cursing so that He could reconcile mans freedom
with His sovereignty. God has established His government by recreating
the events of time through the pronouncements in order to uphold His
statutes. The pronouncements create the pre determined events brought
into time for either for blessing or cursing.AR
