The Divine Simplicity of Pronouncement: Dwelling in Delightful Mystery beneath the Sovereign Architecture of God’s Eternal WordI. The Delightful Mystery of Finite Creatures under Paternal GovernanceAlthough finite creatures, whose prejudiced apprehension of the opaque course of historical contingency remains perilously insignificant, must nevertheless be wisely directed into that delightful mystery wherein the paternal government of God graciously unfolds according to His ideal law, yet this very government finds its satisfactory establishment in the childlike simplicity of speaking creation into peaceful existence. For the sacred Psalmist, in the comprehensive testimony of Psalm 119, unfolds the six authoritative axioms—law, covenants, curses, statutes, decrees, and promises—as the very architecture of divine self-disclosure. These are not arbitrary or disconnected elements, but the divine blueprint that ensures the thorough history of the ideal world is instantly ordered, courteously and unerringly, according to God’s eternal attributes. In this divine simplicity, believers place all their unshakable confidence, pronouncing with authoritative precision the accurate recreation of all things, that the guaranteed security and completed structure of the saints may stand impregnable against every assault.II. The Eternal Covenant of Redemption: Outworking of Triune Counsel through Creative PronouncementThe eternal covenant of redemption, innovated upon the immutable love and unerring justice of the Triune God, is not an abstract decree veiled in impenetrable obscurity. Rather, as John Owen so profoundly articulated in his Exposition of Hebrews, it is the gracious outworking of the Father’s eternal counsel mediated through the Son and applied by the Spirit, wherein the chosen people are brought into union with the divine purposes through the very words that create and sustain reality. Genesis 1:3—“And God said, ‘Let there be light’”—and Psalm 33:6—“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth”—bear eloquent witness that all reality remains an accomplished work of God’s perfect pronouncements. These words are not mere utterances but divine acts that accomplish reality itself, rendering the universe a living testament to His creative authority.Because we are finite, our rudimentary grasp of complex nature and responsible governments would collapse into total lawlessness were God’s directorial control cloaked entirely in mystery; therefore, He has duly administered to us these six axioms in the form of authoritative pronouncements. Herman Bavinck, in his Reformed Dogmatics, rightly observes that the implanted law is no mere external code but the organic revelation of God’s own mind—an internal, living expression of His eternal good pleasure that unites creaturely desire with the Creator’s sovereign will.III. Disciplined Response to Life’s Events through the Six Authoritative AxiomsBelievers are called to react properly to the literal events of their saintly lives by the disciplined exercise of these pronouncements: aggressively opposing their own lust through the terrible curse (Deut. 28:15–68; Ps. 109), longing for good things by solemnly speaking the covenants and promises (Gen. 17:7; 2 Cor. 1:20), overwhelmingly opposing vindictive enemies by the declarative power of the law (Ps. 119:98–100), and ordering their principal speech according to the impeccable logic of the six axioms. In this manner they learn to trust in divine illumination, becoming comfortable within the mysterious communication itself. The Psalmist declares in Psalm 119:130 that “the unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple,” thereby teaching that these six axioms are revealed as spoken, creative words—each sacred utterance containing within itself the entire reasonable explanation of God’s creation, the spirit of all the sacred words residing in the one Word (cf. John 1:1–3; Heb. 1:3).God, in His condescending grace, has lowered Himself by implanting His own sincere desires within us through the law, covenants, statutes, decrees, and promises. As we faithfully gasp these words precisely as He has directly communicated them, our mind, genuine emotion, and will are consumed in the legal reality of the authoritative pronouncements. Thus the objective reality of law becomes the very means of understanding both God and ourselves; the pronouncements inseparably unite our sincere solicitations with the divine solicitations in the creation of the Peaceable Kingdom foretold in Isaiah 11:6–9.IV. The Reordering of Affections and the Restoration of Cosmic ConcinnityTrue eternal joy and fastness—steadfast security—are possible only if the corridors of God’s creation are unified according to that perfect moral law; otherwise love itself cannot be witnessed. Although the thorough history of redemption surpasses finite comprehension, it is sufficiently illuminated by these pronouncements to restore the concinnity of all effects and to defy the lawless wicked who break covenants, disable statutes, mock decrees, and limit pledges (Ps. 119:126; Jer. 31:33–34). As Jonathan Edwards so incisively demonstrated in A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections, the true saint is one whose affections are reordered by the implanted word, such that the soul is gathered into the very mystery of God’s desires, wherein the reasonable description of His legal purposes governs every intended disclosure. If we were merely implanted with practical knowledge apart from the governing eternal law, our excellent speech would remain ungoverned. Therefore we must widely employ these words according to their creative purposes, acting lawfully in the authoritative pronunciation of guaranteed success and impenetrable defense. In this childlike simplicity—echoing our Lord’s own commendation in Matthew 18:3—the paternal government of God is established, and believers are comfortably established in the affectionate knowledge, desire, and courteous action that flow from His godly purpose.V. Conclusion: Forever Gathered into the Heart of the Speaking GodAll reality, then, remains the accomplished work of these pronouncements; the eternal purposes of God have been sufficiently revealed to restore harmony and to bring forth, in due season, the literal circumstances of His eternal kingdom. Hence, believers must be wisely directed to live in delightful mystery. God works in the childlike simplicity of speaking creation into peaceful existence. The paternal government of God, graciously administered according to His ideal law, is satisfactorily established in this divine simplicity. We place all our imperturbable confidence in pronouncing the accurate recreation of all things. And thus, by the Spirit-enabled grasp of the six axioms, we are gathered into the very heart of the God who speaks—and in whose speaking we live, and move, and have our being—forever.
