The psalmist teaches us that true blessing comes from recognizing that everything we have—our life, our talents, our possessions—is a gift from God. To genuinely bless ourselves is to acknowledge this divine generosity and to honor God’s sovereignty. Conversely, when one curses oneself, it is an expression of pride—an attempt to take credit for these gifts or to deny God's authority and provision. Such actions are a way of trying to erase or diminish God's sovereignty, asserting independence from His divine rule. Because we are created by God, we owe Him the highest praise, love, and glory—recognizing that all we are and all we possess are ultimately His gifts. Expressing gratitude and worship to God fulfills our true purpose as His creatures, reflecting the divine harmony and order for which we were created. When we thank and praise Him for all that He loves and has made, we align ourselves with His divine plan and participate in the fulfillment of His eternal purpose—bringing glory to His name and living in accordance with His divine will. God’s actions are motivated by the pursuit of the highest good—the ultimate well-being and glory of His creation. Any deviation from this standard would diminish His divine sovereignty and perfection. Therefore, in loving and seeking the highest good, God is ultimately loving Himself, because His nature is perfectly aligned with goodness and truth. Evil arises, then, when humans attempt to elevate self-love above divine love—when they try to claim credit for what belongs solely to God or to put their own desires and pride above His divine authority. Such misguided efforts are ultimately a rejection of God's sovereignty and a distortion of His intended purpose for creation. When God shaped mankind, His purpose was not random or arbitrary. Instead, He carefully crafted humans to mirror His own divine nature and qualities. All of creation—every creature, every element, every aspect of the universe—exists to reveal His love, His power, and His creative genius. Humanity, in particular, was designed to reflect God's divine attributes and to serve as a testament to His greatness. Acting in alignment with His divine nature requires that God Himself uphold the highest standards of goodness, righteousness, and love—standards that bring Him the greatest joy, satisfaction, and delight. In this way, we understand that all creation exists ultimately to glorify God, because He made everything in His image and for His own pleasure. This act of creation demonstrates His profound love for Himself, for in loving Himself perfectly, He expresses the highest form of love. Psalm 8 serves as a profound reminder of God's incredible wisdom and intentional design in creating humanity. It emphasizes that, in His divine plan, God made humans a little lower than the heavenly beings—angels or divine powers—yet, despite this seemingly humble position, He crowned us with glory and honor. This act of crowning reflects the remarkable dignity and worth that God has bestowed upon us, signifying our special status within His creation. Furthermore, God entrusted us with the responsibility of stewardship over all that He has made; He placed the entire natural world beneath our feet, signifying that we are to care for and govern creation with wisdom and humility.
