The Bible is unwavering and straightforward in its message. It doesn't speak in vague possibilities or uncertain hopes. Instead, it directly confronts sin, bringing it into the light so that God's transforming grace can work on it. The Scriptures serve as God's surprising and counterintuitive solution to our struggles—an antidote to our natural tendency to try and overcome sin through our own wisdom and effort. We cannot simply eliminate sin by human strength alone; such efforts are ultimately futile. When we choose to ignore our old patterns and instead focus on understanding how God responds to our sin, we begin to develop a mindset rooted in grace—an outlook where grace always prevails over sin. So, how do we truly put sin to death? It is only through God's divine means—His Word and His Spirit—that true transformation occurs. The Word functions as a cleansing agent; the Bible itself tells us that we are washed by the Word. But why does this Word have such powerful influence over us? Because it enables us to accept and receive God's grace, which empowers us to kill sin. At its core, evil is any thought or action that seeks to distort God's divine plan, attempting to make His purposes less victorious than what we can achieve through our own strength. The problem with sin is that, unless we recognize it for what it truly is, we will try to respond in our flesh—struggling harder, attempting to ease guilt through effort, remembering sin as a heavy burden rather than trusting God's promise to forgive and forget it, or coming up with schemes to make sin seem powerless.
