Others may find themselves caught emotionally in this spiritual conflict—overcome by guilt and shame, sinking into melancholy, yet driven by a desire to find peace and assurance once more. Still, there are those whose devotion to others—their love for their brothers and sisters in Christ—becomes so intense that they focus more on external acts of service and pleasing others than on seeking the personal, intimate reassurance from the Spirit or experiencing the sweetness of God's love. Their lives may be marked by outward conformity, but they might miss the vital, personal encounter with Christ that truly sustains and fuels genuine assurance. Yet, as with all beginnings, that initial joy can fade. The glow of that first love can diminish, and the familiar struggle with sin reemerges—reminding us of the days before we knew Christ. Our zeal to glorify God might wane as we face the persistent pull of temptation and distraction. Often, our approach to this ongoing battle reflects methods we once relied upon—ways learned in the flesh before we experienced the freeing power of Christ. This is why I believe the spiritual journey is complex and multifaceted. Some believers are motivated by a deep desire for spiritual excellence, engaging in disciplined self-denial—rigorous, perhaps, but sincere in their pursuit of holiness. The depth of our initial awakening—the insight and understanding that follow—is also a work of the Holy Spirit, and it manifests differently in each person. Every believer’s path is uniquely crafted by God's sovereign design. We often find ourselves struggling to truly believe that Christ alone is enough—enough to satisfy, enough to secure our salvation, enough to fill us with love, peace, and unwavering confidence. We know intellectually that He can make all things right and work out everything for our good, but at times doubt creeps in. We wonder if truly knowing Him might somehow fill our hearts with a constant, unshakeable love and peace—an assurance that flows from the unending display of His love for us. If only we could grasp fully how far His love has gone to reach us—how deep, how wide, how relentless. We would then realize that His interest in us is boundless, and His love is more than sufficient to carry us through every moment of our lives.
