We are called to build a protective barrier around our hearts—a kind of armor that is shaped through deep reflection on the gospel. By immersing ourselves fully in its truths, we remove the falsehoods and empty philosophies that distract us from the clear and simple truth found in Christ. The approach of whole counsel encourages us to return to simplicity, driven by a sincere and pure desire. We achieve this purity by applying the details of the gospel, which help us to reduce our desires to their most essential and genuine form. Through this process, we focus our longing on a single, true object—our ultimate desire—leading us into the clarity and freedom that the gospel provides. There are two primary ways in which we communicate—two distinct modes of speaking and understanding. Yet, I believe that few are ever taught the higher, biblical way—where we are commanded not just to speak, but to speak in a manner rooted in divine truth. The Scriptures show us that our unity is grounded in God's comprehensive counsel, which stands as our unwavering defense. Instead of falling into the worldly idea that we must share all our burdens openly with others, we are called first to bring them to God. The Bible reveals that desires are sanctified and refined through the gospel—addressing both the complex thoughts and the simplest, purest expressions of what is good. Even if many abandon the gospel’s way, we must continue to meditate on its truth, purging our minds of falsehoods and curses. In doing so, we learn more and more how to love rightly—the object of our desire—free and untainted, embodying the purest expression of what we long for most. We are also to wield our righteous hatred properly—rejecting false images and counterfeit ways of speaking. This is a form of guarding our hearts—a vigilant stance in a world filled with corrupt speech. We must develop a rich inner life—a sanctuary of thought—while maintaining humility and restraint in our outward words. The more our desires are refined, the more we will resist the curse of worldly speech—a silent war fought through distortion and deception in language. When our hatred is rightly directed, we oppose every false mode of communication, creating a silent shield of resistance—that protective barrier that preserves our souls.
