When we perceive God's light or glory as something mysterious, we risk rendering it an enigma. Instead, this Psalm illustrates that God's glory becomes fully evident when He awakens and revitalizes the nation, aligning His law with His national purposes. As a result, our individual experiences of salvation are reflections of the opposition we face, shaped by the extent to which God's law allows or restricts behavior within our culture. As a nation strays further from divine law, it invites God's opposition, which we interpret as His wrath, often manifesting as various forms of prevention or restraint. In contrast, when God awakens, we witness an outpouring of His grace. When a nation strays from the commandments of God, it shifts from a position of divine favor to one marked by divine disfavor, often culminating in exile or subjugation. As those chosen by God, we bear the significant responsibility of being guardians and interpreters of His law, tirelessly advocating for our nation by proclaiming His statutes and covenants. In Psalm 44:23-26, the psalmist fervently calls upon the Lord to awaken from what seems like slumber, expressing confusion over His apparent absence during times of suffering and adversity. The psalmist conveys a deep sense of abandonment, mourning their descent into despair, and urgently pleading for divine intervention and redemption, all rooted in God’s unwavering love. For over thirty years, I have passionately recited this Psalm, acutely aware that all of God's chosen people carry the weighty duty of establishing a nation that operates under His laws, decrees, statutes, curses, and covenants. God clearly defines the essence of a nation through His divine law, and nations built on these foundational principles are intrinsically anchored in the Word of God. The Scriptures articulate the idea that the inheritance of nations is a legacy to be passed down through generations, a sacred trust entrusted to us by God. In this context, we remain steadfast despite the decline of any nation, continually compiling our declarations in anticipation of the Day of Judgment. Nevertheless, there is a persistent hope that God might awaken and rejuvenate the nation. Such a restoration would see the weight of His glory aligning with our earnest prayers, as expressed in this Psalm, ultimately leading to a revival of national freedom and spiritual renewal. In this context, the psalmist articulates that God's covenants are, at their core, His solemn promises, embodying His sovereign creative authority. This crucial understanding forms the basis of the psalmist’s claim that divine silence often prevails during periods of national servitude. However, for the elect, this silence should not be interpreted as God’s distance; rather, it suggests a state of dormancy, where the potential for awakening and renewal lies in wait. It is vital to understand that salvation encompasses the divine law that governs all of creation. There is no manifestation of God's attributes—commonly referred to as His glory—without it being framed and understood through His law.
