This natural understanding, however, is significantly constrained by the spiritually barren state of a sharp intellect, political ambition, and personal emotions. Nevertheless, God has graciously bestowed upon humanity a moral law that clearly delineates the framework of social interactions. Yet, this natural understanding tends to complicate the law, introducing vague relationships and basic principles aimed at achieving political success. Humans naturally adopt a simplistic, childlike faith in God while simultaneously layering on innumerable principles focused on personal achievement. The apostle emphasizes that the mere letter of the law is lifeless; it is the Spirit that authentically administers the law, bringing forth true vitality. Under moral law, individuals often find themselves shackled by feelings of guilt, shame, and fear. The law serves as a curse upon the inherently authorized.
