The reason God allowed multiple wives was for the purpose of procreation. I believe that in the Bible, which is a narrative of redemption, we often misinterpret these accounts in terms of moral lessons. The primary focus was on producing a child who would be a secure redeemer. It is important to note that God never compromises justice and fairness. God ordained the practice of multiple wives before the creation of the world. To suggest that God was immoral for permitting polygamy is to portray God as unjust. However, God established a balance of good and evil through the law of blessing and cursing. Therefore, polygamy was allowed to exist because God graciously allows even heathen kings to live. The negative aspects of polygamy were not overlooked, as it was ultimately cursed. The sins associated with polygamy were fully forgiven through sacrifice, but this does not mean that sins are easily overlooked. Every sin is taken into account by a God who upholds the moral standard of divine justice. Polygamy was permitted to exist as a lesser evil, but ultimately, God will faithfully carry out eternal curses on all wicked individuals. The Psalmist teaches that if God were to judge the saints, He would need to begin with the heathen nations. The eternal curse of the law serves to guide moral behavior and implement necessary evil in order to advance redemption. Redemption is not simply a moral tale for us to learn from, but a demonstration of God's faithfulness to His covenants with His people. It is not because of human righteousness, but because of God's faithfulness that redemption is possible. The eternal sacrifice cannot be mocked.
