Calvinists frequently turn to the wisdom of revered theologians and clergy of the past in an attempt to deepen their understanding of God as a paternal figure. By memorizing and repeating these doctrines, they may erroneously believe they have established a genuine connection with the divine Creator. However, I argue that a genuine relationship with God necessitates a personal and intimate conversation in which we express our unique desires for His guidance and companionship. Mere recitation of beliefs is insufficient; true knowledge of God requires active engagement with Him on an individual level.
The language we employ does not merely regurgitate established beliefs, but rather serves as a manifestation of the distinct and symbiotic connection between a child and their parental figure. Our expressions are not solely a product of our personal intellectual endeavors or the examination of religious scriptures, but rather function as a mode of reverent interaction. According to John, it is essential for individuals to move beyond a superficial intellectual understanding of their relationship with God and instead cultivate a personal connection. This involves being convinced not only through theological arguments, but through intimate communication with God that is tailored to each individual's unique needs as His beloved children. Rather than perceiving God solely as a theological concept, individuals should seek to encounter Him in a way that goes beyond doctrine, allowing Him to reveal Himself in a deep and personal manner. It is through this experiential journey that individuals can truly appreciate the depth and beauty of their faith. This, at its core, is the essence of genuine Calvinism.
