Savoring...consuming...partaking...ingesting...yearning...aching...comprehending...in intertwining...reveling...exclaiming...singing...mourning...troubled...grieved...are all synonymous terms in scripture for portraying a person with human qualities. The Christian encounters two distinct realms that shape their choices. We exist in a cosmos of predetermined truths. Even before the inception of the world, God intimately grasped all the components that constitute the reality of inhabiting this physical and metaphysical realm. While we may attempt to explain the process of extinguishing these various transgressions, merely comprehending the concept of mortifying sin fails to cultivate the comprehensive encounter of immersing oneself in the vibrant hues, flavors, and delights of apprehending the all-encompassing enlightenment of the Spirit. Mortifying sin entails feeling genuine remorse over our transgressions and comprehending the peril of dwelling in the guilt, sorrow, and trepidation that accompany the dominion of sin. Thus, there arises a necessity to undergo deliverance from sin with the same fervor one would confront its oppressive reign. The sting of sin is death, a progression of its repercussions. This distressing facet of these diverse encounters determines the level at which one confronts these various sins and influences the selection of objects intended to satisfy one's desires. Mortification necessitates descending into the depths of anger, guilt, fear, and dread to confront the reality of living in a sinful universe, bearing the weight of sin's presence, and grappling with its consequences. Thus, "tasting" in the biblical sense refers to experiencing a profound level of humility, immersed in this sorrowful state of mind.
