I humbly acknowledge, O LORD, that I do not boast in my heart nor do I exalt myself in my thoughts; I do not occupy myself with matters beyond my understanding. Instead, I have calmed and quieted my inner being, likening it to a weaned child resting peacefully in the arms of its mother. Therefore, O Israel, place your trust in the LORD both in the present moment and for all eternity.Upon salvation, we are bestowed with God's desires, akin to nurturing a newborn. It is our intention to safeguard these desires in order to achieve success. These desires surpass our comprehension, as evidenced by the Psalms likening them to the divine act of creation through spoken word. Our soul reflects a mysterious likeness to the entirety of God. The sentiment expressed in Psalm 131, "My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty," underscores the humility and reverence we should possess towards God's commands and promises. By internalizing and vocalizing these principles, we transcend earthly desires beyond our control. In essence, we redirect our focus towards matters within our grasp, steering clear of potential dangers and embracing promises. The Psalmist humbly acknowledges that his eyes are not filled with arrogance. He understands that everything in this life is under the control of God, who alone has the power to redeem. In order for redemption to occur, there must be a sacrifice, a death that leads to new life. The Psalmist recognizes that his own desires can only be pure when he surrenders the hope of finding redemption through any other means. He must eliminate anything that opposes salvation and fully submit to God's deliverance. Essentially, dying to oneself means being consumed by God's anger, love, and covenant promises, which can be achieved through prayer in accordance with the Psalms. This dying process involves being compelled by God's mysterious attributes. Furthermore, the Psalmist declares that he has calmed and quieted his soul, indicating that he finds no confidence or relief in anything other than God's deliverance. In the tranquility of stillness, divine salvation is revealed. The previous worldly desires have been extinguished through personal encounters, and new aspirations emerge from the depths of our being. This concept is beautifully illustrated in Psalm 42:7, where the author depicts the profound connection between the depths of our souls and the majestic sound of cascading waterfalls. Just as one can be engulfed by the tumultuous power of the ocean's waves, so too can we be consumed by our desire to align with God's will. These desires may manifest as pleasurable sensations crashing upon our inner shores or as a profound sense of submission to the sovereignty of His kingdom. The author acknowledges that he has let go of his own self-serving ambitions and has relinquished self-assuredness, denouncing any destructive thoughts that contradict his renewed desires. He has arrived at the threshold between blessings and curses, immersing himself in the enigmatic realm of divine mystery. Consequently, his soul is brimming with hope and anticipation.
