Men are inherently unable to meet the everlasting moral standards set by God. Since the fall, men have been separated from God, not merely emotionally or physiologically affected by a disease. There are only three states in which men exist. In the grip of sin, men are in a perpetual state of judgment. They are not just lost, but actively opposed to God. They are at odds with every aspect of God and harbor a deep hatred towards Him. From the very beginning of their lives, men scheme against the knowledge of God and remain ignorant of His ways. They dwell in complete spiritual darkness and despise everything associated with God, including those who profess faith in Christ. Men naturally recoil from anything that bears the name of God, prioritizing their own interests over their love for Him. Their thoughts are devoid of divine love and lack any sense of natural affection. Men are not only steeped in sin, but also spiritually dead, continuously under God's condemning power and subject to His eternal judgment. Mans sinful behavior not only offends God's holiness but also challenges the eternal standard of His holiness. Men fail to grasp the true nature of their sin and the everlasting consequences it brings upon them. If God were to judge men solely by His unforgiving standard, they would be eternally punished, without any means of changing their state, starting from the expulsion from the garden.
God is inherently and unchangingly holy, meaning that He remains holy at all times. Wherever God is present, His eternal presence requires an eternal state of holiness. Not only do humans frequently commit sins that disrespect His holiness, but they are also incapable of meeting His standards of righteousness. Humans cannot comprehend the intensity of His anger, nor can they fear God enough during every moment of their existence. Any individual who believes they can please God will ultimately face the overwhelming force of His eternal wrath. They will essentially be shattered against a solid obstacle. Furthermore, who is capable of enduring the complete wrath of God? Who can even begin to grasp the enormity of this punishment? What human can withstand the everlasting demands of God's law?
The holiness of God is so overwhelming that anyone who has ever experienced His presence has been deeply impacted by it. The more a person becomes aware of God's presence, the more they realize their own lack of righteousness. Meeting God leaves individuals feeling perplexed and humbled. His holiness is truly awe-inspiring. God graciously allows humanity to live in this world, receiving discipline for their sins without being completely consumed by His eternal wrath. Even the smallest inability to perform a single righteous act or fully comprehend God's self-revelation demonstrates our shortcomings. It is impossible for anyone to fully grasp the extent of God's righteous standard, and if judged by that standard, even the most righteous individual would be destroyed. One day, God will pour out His eternal wrath on humanity, as His eternal nature requires Him to meet the demands of judgment for sin with an eternal punishment. People will ultimately face the full consequences of His wrath. We are constantly living under the imminent judgment of God, as His wrath is manifested wherever sin is not atoned for. Sadly, mankind is without a solution to this predicament. God's wrath is continually present in the unfolding of events in this world, yet many remain unaware of its depth and nature. God is currently pouring out His wrath upon individuals, one by one, as people pass away every day. God will ultimately be justified, and His holiness will be upheld. No one can escape the judgment of God, not even believers who still experience the consequences of sin. Sorrow is a constant companion in the face of sin, as we long for the complete restoration of all things. However, our sorrow is mingled with joy, as we are not without hope. Through our union with Christ, we are spared from experiencing the full effects of God's wrath.
