I understand that when our basic human needs are met, we tend to enter into a state of mind characterized by serenity. This is probably the best psychological description of the peace that humans can experience. In my own experience, the division between the psychological and the spiritual in America leads to a sense of independence and self-sufficiency.The desires we have learned to pursue in the spirit of freedom teach us to think in a divided way, with our attention focused on immediate gratification rather than long-term goals. Our connections to biblical concepts of how these desires arise from the depths of our persons give us a sense of the short-term effects of our choices, as we reflect on our own instant satisfaction with these affections. However, if we find the affections arising out of the seminal powers of grace that have been driven deep into our renewed inner man, we will have a much more profound experience. So that we are taught an entirely different holistic identity. We will have illuminations that teach us how we have learned this kind of American independent psychology. We are a divided nation having a divided individualism. While we may have some understanding of our identity from the images we have in our minds, we cannot fully comprehend it from these alone. This is because we do not fully understand the renewed paradigm. Therefore, God must teach us directly, not only with regard to spiritual knowledge, but also how to live in accordance with that knowledge on a daily basis. We either take for granted our independence and act out of our own self-righteous understanding, or we simply do not remember correctly the way we should go. All of this stems from our failure to find God as mysterious in His renewed effects.
