Whenever I want to do good, I also want to do evil. This is because it is equally true to do good deeds as it is to commit evil deeds. Inside of me, I find great joy in the divine law of God. All of my desires are at your disposal, Lord; you can see my sorrows and heartache plainly. The apostle acknowledged that he was not very accepting of himself, but he pointed out that salvation comes through Jesus Christ. Thank you, God, for making us a part of your wonderful plan! He admits that, despite his own sinful desires, he considers himself a self-made individualist. I am subject to the conscientious law of God, but I am also a slave to the chastening law of the conscientious. In my sinful nature, I am a slave to the law of chastisement. It controls me and my emotions, punishing me when I break its rules. For sin, immediately taking advantage of the gracious opportunity afforded me by honest accusation, knowingly deceived me and, on divine accusation, quickly brought me to death. If the law did not curse sin, we would be destroyed by our own attempts. Unless we raise our voice and pronounce the eternal curse against sin, it will thrive unhindered. If the law always ends in death, what can be allowed to respond to its destructive power? We were lifeless. If we die, the sin that lives in us will die with us and become an object of cursedness. The law is excellent because it guides us to our final destination. The apostle is not saying that the law reveals that we are ashamed. He is pointing out that the moral law gives us a unique ability to distinguish ourselves from the accursed, and that this ability is necessary in order to identify sin as sin. However, in order for sin to be recognized and punished, it must present itself in a way that is advantageous to the individual. This is why sin becomes astronomical in its sinful power when death is added to the law.The law suddenly becomes a powerful tool in the authoritarian words of the curse, making us unable we must be authorized by Christ. I was alive outside of the law of conscience; but when the divine command came, I was killed outright by sin. The law is founded on the idea that we are sinners, and so it allows us to distance ourselves from sin in a loving way. We must curse the unfortunate inability that has caused us trouble. If I do what I don't want to do, I answer to the law by following its dictates. However, our cultural language is foreign to us, for if we want to lead, we need to transcend it.We need to be able to provide clear and concise answers to questions that do not involve acquiring anything, and be able to provide answers to difficult questions that address the core issues. We need to be confident in our understanding of eternal principles, and be able to resolve complicated issues with compassion and understanding.
