There were many factions of men who took part in the transition from Sauls reign to Davids. You will see that most of Davids armies were made up of Sauls abusive pursuit of these fugitives. In this context of transition, David was a type of Christ who separated the sheep from the goats.David was the only king who was also a prophet and priest. Which makes the transition different from any kingdom in history. David pinned the first establishment of three branches of government in eternal pronouncements. David was the only king who ruled the world, not by military conquest but pronounced kingdom. David had the divine authority of the seal. He could not be killed. He pronounced defeat of all other kingdoms. Because he was a prophet. Theologians teach these covenants were limited in a Theocratic government. But the Psalms teach eternal salvation in the context of covenants. Not a political salvation. Therefore David is proving Gods covenant by the eternal punishment of his enemies in his declared guilt in punishing the guilty. God is pronouncing through the prophet priest and king, the eternal damnation of the wicked and the justification of the righteous. The pronouncements are not limited to Davids government. But they are Christ pronouncements of eternal salvation. Davids kingship transcends earthly governments.
