Ps 103 8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;"
This is a figure of speech called ellipsis. It is assumed that His anger has a place by the absence of the words about His accusing .There is an assumption in the Lord being compassionate and gracious that His anger is directed to enforce the written statement. In this context we are being taught that the Lord is providing the qualities of redemption to further our life of repentance. So we see that He reveals Himself in order to show our success by displaying His works. The christian life is not a life of bondage to the law in order to be driven to the Redeemer. Its a life that condemns sinners who are under the curse of the law as our being driven to Christ by grace. Gods anger cannot be both a agent of change and display of His rejection in his relationship to the wicked. That is a contradiction. The anger of the Lord is the fire that goes out in front of Israel to make a path by destroying all of their enemies.
He is saying there that we enjoy a real forgiveness ,real redemption, real satisfaction by Gods curses that are directed in order to protect this environment in the relationship. It is not real if it is bathed in a contradiction. The whole purpose is to show the kind of goodness of God by the display of that goodness in His elect. If God is angry at His elect then His goodness is a mystery. There is no logical reason to believe that Gods goodness is present, ongoing, or increasing until it is finally successful. Why would we accept a goodness that may or may not be real? It is better to just go out and party. At least we know the fun is real fun. Whether you believe this or not , you hate yourself by accepting a person who presents something of himself in order to please God, by not cursing that person. His pain that is acceptable to belief in Christ.
So the context of Gods success is based upon the proper use of the pronouncements. The Psalmist pronounces the law in destroying all opposition of law breakers, pronouncing the covenant in order to hold God to His word, which enforces the need to trust in the words of the promise. And it creates the confidence that we are defined by word as who we are. And he pronounces the decrees in order to patiently wait for a real future event in which the obedience of faith is displayed by speaking as God would create the future event.Waiting is not doing anything. Waiting is speaking the decrees. Then he speaks the curse in order to destroy any thing that could create a division in Gods purposes. And finally he pronounces the statutes so that he experiences the success of his ways in the reality that Gods kingdom has already been established. It is leading on the bases of a firm foundation. These pronouncements are written to produce the success of Gods benefits that are described in this teaching on christian repentance.
